TransPennine Express is seeking a statement of interest from its suppliers for a fleet of at least 15 bimodal locomotives for use in Mk5 vehicles.
Deployments approved by the First Group include up to 30 bimodal locomotives, plus 5 for use in the Great Western Railway sleeper service.
Operators say the new locomotive must be able to operate on overhead lines and the route is not yet electrified, or for emergency use, it must be able to operate in an alternative traction mode, namely diesel or battery.
TransPennine Express states in EOI support information that all engines must be at least Euro V compliant and meet all NTSN standards for noise.
The TPE also states that the locomotive must be able to travel up to 100 mph. TransPennine Express wants to use the new bimode locomotive with the current CAF MK5A carriage and will modify it for use with the Automatic Select Door Operation (ASDO) control system and other control and passenger information systems (PIS). is needed.

TPE's current train formation consists of five cars consisting of four cars and a control car for the current class 68 push-pull operation, but according to TPE, the new locomotive should be able to run with up to seven cars.
Operators say the new bimode locomotive is expected to be used throughout the TPE network, but adds that the main uses of the locomotive are:
TPE South Route between Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester, Shefield and Cleethorpes
TPE North Route to Scarborough, Middlesbrough, Red Car, Saltburn, or Newcastle via Liverpool, Newton Willows, Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, Hull, or York. Some of these routes are electrified and more routes are expected thanks to the TransPennine Route Upgrade Project.
The Great Western Railway needs a new locomotive that can drive up to nine Mk3 vehicles on the Night Riviera Sleeper Service and can operate on the route from Paddington to Penzance. GWR locomotive maintenance is carried out by GWR staff at Longrock Depot, Penzance and Reading.
