The Stanier mogul Foundation has released the latest information on the overhaul of the Stanier mogul Class 5260 of London, Midland and Scottish Railroad (LMS) "Stanier mogul" Class No. 13268 (British Rail 42968).

We decided to renew the gasket on the front cylinder cover, so we chose a different type of gasket. The new one is made of annealed copper. This recommendation came from team leader Graham. This is due in part to the soft copper gaskets used in other locomotives based on the Severn Valley Railway (SVR).

Recently, the superheater head block was machined on a large milling machine. The work currently completed included machining new sheets and drilling and tapping where welds were made to repair cracks.

Replacement front drop plates are in the process of being made. Starting with the righthand side of the engine`s frame, a jig was made to ensure the new holes were drilled in the right spot. Once checked and approved, the jig and mag drill was set up and began to drill holes into the running plate`s support angle. In due course bolts will be fitted to hold the new angle front drop plates.
